The Uglydoll Truth

😀😀😀😀⚪️⚪️

What happens when you mix Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, and Pitbull with a stuffed, blissfully unaware doll and a dream?  You get Uglydolls, the toe tapping hunk of personal development for kids.

Moxie (Kelly Clarkson) is a pink, misshapen manufacturing reject who dreams of making a child happy.  She wakes up morning after morning hoping today will be the day she fulfills her life’s destiny.  She finally decides to take matters into her own hands and goes on a quest to find a child instead of waiting for the child to find her.  Moxie, along with a few of her friends, leave Uglyville and find themselves at the Institute of Perfection.  Lou (Nick Jonas), while exploiting the invisible flaws in the perfect dolls, teaches all the perfect dolls how to avoid anything and everything which could potentially smudge, soil or stain.

You will not find any subdued, thematic undertones in this film.  Uglydolls does not attempt to hide it’s lessons in self worth.  As an adult, I am hesitant to hate on it for having such little stealth.  It is, after all, a kids movie; and, kids (as well as adults) focus way too much on looking perfect and judging others. Unfortunately, the plot is flat and it felt like an attempt to remake Trolls.

If your child is struggling to embrace their own individuality, it is worth a trip to the theater.  Uglydolls is uplifting and fun and my kids (both the boys and the girl) thoroughly enjoyed the movie.  As for me, despite it’s lack of subtlety and ingenuity, Uglydolls kept me entertained with it’s fantastic music and adorable misshapen misfits.

Did you see the movie this weekend?  What did you think?
