How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a Visual Delight!

Yesterday, the latest movie from DreamWorks, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (Directed by Dean DeBlois) hit cinemas everywhere.  While this was my first experience with the trilogy, my kids were eager to see Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), Astrid (America Ferrera) and their favorite dragon, Toothless on the big screen.

Let me start by saying that animation is gorgeous.  From the beautifully intricate character’s clothing, to the colorfully detailed dragons, to the luminescent Hidden World; the imagery is simply spectacular.

Hiccup, the Viking Chief who’s mission is to save all the dragons, brings danger to his kingdom. As Chief, he must protect his people from the dragon killer, Grimmel (F. Murray Abraham).  Hiccup leads his people and all the protected dragons on a quest to find safety in The Hidden World, a place he only knows from legend.

The artistry is what held my attention through the fist 20 minutes since, knowing nothing about the How To Train Your Dragon series, I was clearly missing a few key plot points.  However, once this movie’s specific plot line was in full tilt, the story was enjoyable.  Despite some of the intense scenes, which caused my kids to take cover under my arms while averting their eyes, they absolutely loved the movie.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is based on the book series, How to Train Your Dragon, by Cressida Cowell.  I left the theater excited to order the books for my oldest kiddo!

Have you seen this movie or either of the prequels?  What about the books?  Have your kids read them?  Share your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. My co-worker saw this over the weekend and loooooved it! She has no kids but, was age appropriate when the first one came out and said that she was so excited to see how the trilogy wrapped up. She said that she actually got teared up at times!
